Kanchanaburi (Thesaban Mueang in Thai language)  is a medium size  town  in the Western part of central Thailand and the capital of Kanchanaburi province. In 2009 it had a population of 67,500. Kanchanaburi is only 130 Kms away from Bangkok and can be reached in maximum  3 hours  by car, both from Bangkok International Airport as well as from Bangkok City center. [Follow the guide]

 The Bridge Over the River Kwai (City)

In 1942,  Kanchanaburi was under Japanese control. It was here that Allied POWs (Prisoners Of War), when building the infamous Thailand-Burma Railway,  constructed an important  Bridge over the River Kwai.
